Blepharoplasty Surgery

Eyelid surgery, blepharoplasty, is one of the top five cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the United States. Last year, over 200,000 eyelid surgery procedures were performed.

In this video, Virginia Beach Plastic Surgeon, Matthew Galumbeck, discusses blepharoplasty surgery. The causes of eyelid bags and wrinkles will be discussed. The eyelid surgery procedure will be reviewed and blepharoplasty before and after pictures of one of Dr. Galumbeck’s Virginia Beach patients will be shown.

Blepharoplasty surgery is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that can give great results. Recovery from upper and lower eyelid surgery is only a few days. Blepharoplasty can be performed on patients of any age. Fat and loose skin are permanently removed, giving patients a more refreshed and rejuvenated appearance without giving an operated or startled look. Eyelid surgery can remove under eye bags as well as upper eyelid hooding.

From Galumbeck Plastic Surgery, this is new techniques in cosmetic surgery.

Dr. Galumbeck the eyes are one area that tend to look tired first in a person’s face and eyelid surgery can certainly remedy that.

Well, eyelid surgery is a very popular technique in cosmetic surgery because not only does it make a very big difference but it’s very subtle and the people say you look well rested, you look you come back from vacation, not that you had your eyelids done, didn’t you.

We don’t certainly give someone a startled appearance, but in the same token we want to address certain things that occur in the eyes that give that tired, older, aged look.

Mainly what happens in eyelid surgery or rather eyelids with age is that there’s fat, fat in the upper eyelid and in the lower eyelid and there’s a band that holds that fat back. With time that band loosens up the fat slides forward and it stretches out the skin and in the upper eyelid you get hooding, in the lower eyelid you get bags and puffiness.

So the goal of eyelid surgery is to remove the extra fat, remove the extra skin, tighten up the eye to give it a better appearance and a more youthful, more well rested appearance.

The incisions are small; they are in the upper eyelid crease. And right underneath the lower eyelid eyelashes. So once are healed they are really invisible.

Recovery is quick. Stitches only stay in for a couple a days. I’ve had people come in on Saturday and get their eyelids done and then come in Monday morning, get those stitches out. A little cover up makeup on and go to work. Recovery is really fast for eyelid surgery.

As far as age, people would say well am I ready, am I old enough, am I too old? It’s not really an age thing with eyelid surgery. I have had women and men in their twenties come in and get eyelid surgery done because of puffiness that is more heredity. They say my parents have it, I’ve got it, and want to get rid of it. I would say on average, the average age is somewhere to the mid to late thirties, where people start to see change in their eyelids. Now certainly, I have done eyelid surgery on people in their late seventies or early eighties. But I would say the average age is probably thirty five to forty five when people start noticing the changes.

You know women say I lose the platform to put makeup on my upper eyelid. People say I always look tired. Men, especially in business, come in and say say, you know it’s very competitive out there and I look older, I look more tired and I want to get something done. But I don’t want to have an operated look. Certainly, it can make a huge difference having eyelid surgery done.

OK, so men and women you can take heed, this is a procedure for either of you.

Here’s a picture of a woman who we did eyelids surgery on. You can see in a before picture that she’s got hooding of her upper eyelid. Again that’s caused by the fat that slides forward and the skin that is stretched out because it’s very thin and supple. Same thing on the lower eyelids, she has some crinkling and a little bit of puffiness.

So our goal is to remove the extra fat, remove the extra skin, and you can see in her after picture that her eyes are, just overall, they’re more awake, they look more open, without being startled. And that’s what most people notice, is that you look well rested.

But if you look closely the differences are that hooding from the upper eyelids is gone. The puffiness, the crinkles under the lower eyelid are gone as well.

And that is the result that you can get from blepharoplasty surgery, a very standard and routine result.

So a big difference with not a whole lot of work and not a lot of recovery time..
