Winter Skin Care – 10 Tips To Survive the Chill

Winter skin care doesn’t have to be difficult. The weather outside is frightful. Dry winter air can wreak havoc on your skin leaving it dry, itchy, and irritated.

Heidi Lavan, one of our master estheticians, offers winter skin care tips to combat dry skin causes and help keep your skin feeling moist and supple all winter long.

Winter Skin Care Tips

  1. Invest in a humidifier – Using a humidifier in your home or office will add moisture to dry winter air and help keep your skin hydrated. Run a humidifier in the rooms you spend the most time in, including your bedroom while you sleep.
  2. Lower the thermostat – When it’s chilly outside, what’s the first thing you want to do? Crank up the heat! But central heat can make the air in your house even drier. Try setting the thermostat at a cool, yet comfortable setting (68°F to 72°F) to maintain healthy skin.
  3. Skip hot showers – Although it may be tempting to warm up with a long, steamy shower, hot water dries out your skin by stripping it of its natural oils. Instead, take a 5-10 minute lukewarm shower. You should also avoid using excessively hot water when washing your hands.
  4. Choose cleanser wisely –  For optimal winter skin care steer clear of regular bar soaps, since they tend to contain irritating ingredients and fragrances. Instead, start washing with a fragrance-free, moisturizing cleanser.
  5. Modify your facial skin care regimen for the season – During the winter months, choose cream-based cleansers, and apply toners sparingly. Look for toners that contain little or no alcohol unless your skin is excessively oily. For winter skin care at night, use a richer moisturizer on your face.
  6. Moisturize frequently – Maintain healthy skin by moisturizing after washing up. It’s best to use a cream or ointment in the winter. Lotions are better in warmer, humid climates.
  7. Apply sunscreen even in winter – It is still important to protect your skin from harmful UV rays on cold, dreary days in winter. Before going outside, apply a moisturizing, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher to all exposed areas of your body.
  8. Wear appropriate clothing – Many cold-weather fabrics can aggravate dry winter skin. Keep wool and rough clothing from directly touching your skin as they can cause dry skin to get irritated and itchy.  Wear soft, breathable materials against your skin, and then pull on a warmer sweater. Protect your hands from cold winter air with gloves or mittens.
  9. Eat right and stay hydrated – Sometimes when skin is very dry, it can be helped by foods or supplements that contain omega-3 or omega-6 fatty acids, such as fish oil and flax seed oil. For the most part it is important to help the skin moisturize from the outside.
  10. Change out of wet clothes quickly – Wearing wet clothes and shoes can further irritate your skin and cause itchiness. Be sure to remove wet gloves, socks, and pants as soon as possible.

Healthy After Summer Skin

skin care tips after summer

Everyone wants the best skin care tips to renew their summer damaged skin. Autumn’s arrival is everyone’s opportunity for post-summer skin assessment, care and repair. In all its tanned, golden glory, summer skin was once regarded as the very appearance of good health.

Today, a dark (real) tan indicates sun damage to skin, with short and long term effects, including hyper-pigmentation (brown spots), fine wrinkles and skin cancer, including melanoma. The anti-tanning lobby is powerful. But it didn’t deter millions of Americans from sunning this summer. Nor did it screen them from incidental sun damage that occurred while gardening, golfing, surfing or driving with inadequate UV protection.

The goal of skin care during September and October is extending summer’s glow, and repairing damage to skin.

After Summer Skin Care Tips

  1. Fake It – If you aren’t ready to say goodbye to your tan, use a bronzing product or a professional body burnish.

  1. Moisturize It – Fall means lower humidity. But don’t let that lead to dry skin.  Regular application of skin type specific moisturizers after bath and shower maintain soft, supple skin.

  1. Exfoliate It – Tanned skin eventually reveals a dull, scaly texture. Mechanical exfoliation by a loofah or a cosmetic scrub, such as Skin Amnesty Mask removes cellular debris in the skin’s outermost layers, polishing and preparing the surface for skincare.

  1. Treat It – Where there’s evidence of sun damage, a chemical peel (ie, products containing alpha and beta-hydroxy acids) that reaches the skin’s deeper layers may be the best choice to stimulate cell turnover and to address more serious skin damage. For the best results combine a professional peel with at home products.

  1. Restore It – Autumn is a critical time to restore collagen, elastin and antioxidants to damaged skin. Look for serums and topical applications containing Vitamin C, which acts as an antioxidant to promote the synthesis of collagen while blocking collagen breakdown.

  1. Read It – Give product labels the once over, twice. Moisturizers should be lanolin-free; Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that improves the effectiveness of Vitamin C; Squalene, (an extract of olive oil) and other plant-based products provide superior hydrating abilities.

4 Easy Tips For Healthy Skin This Winter

Our very own Heidi Lavan, lead esthetician at Spa Phoenix, gives us 4 tips for healthy skin this winter.

We have all used the excuses not to take care of our skin.

“But I’m tired!”, “I just don’t have time!” etc. I’ve heard it all and lived these truths myself.  The difference is that I choose to make myself a priority.  It’s not always easy and yes, I’m tired too, but you cannot stop taking care of yourself. That doesn’t make for a happy, energetic and calm momma.  With that said, here are my…

Easy Tips For Healthy Skin This Winter

  • Remove eye makeup first (and always!). Do not skip this simple step and then wonder why you have dark circles the next morning. It may be yesterday’s mascara!
  • Wash your face with a creamy cleanser, exfoliate dead skin and excess makeup away.  Now you have a beautifully clean palate and your skin will be able to better absorb all the wonderful antioxidants and moisture you’re about to bestow upon it!
  • Use a hydrating serum with your PM moisturizer. Skin Amnesty Infusion, a serum rich in antioxidants or St. Barth Avocado Oil along with your night moisturizer makes a huge impact to keep your skin healthy during the dry winter months.
  • Use a cool-mist humidifier near your bed throughout the winter. It aids in keeping your skin and nasal passages moist while sleeping, giving you hydrated skin and clear breathing the next morning.

Taking care of your skin not only makes you look great, but your skin feels and is healthier!  Healthy supple skin is your best defense against extreme dryness which can lead to cracked areas and leave you prone to infections and sickness.

Tips For Healthy Skin

Tips For Healthy Skin

November is known for spending time with friends and family at Thanksgiving and big sales on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. What you may not know is that November is also National Healthy Skin Month. So I thought I would spend this blog talking about skin aging, factors that affect it, and how to have healthy skin.

Skin Aging and Inflammation
As the skin ages many detrimental changes occur. Decreased production of collagen, increased breakdown of collagen, and increased presence of free oxygen radicals lead to the appearance of unhealthy, aged, wrinkled skin. Furthermore, these imbalances lead to decreased moisturization of the skin and unbalanced sebum production.
The inflammatory response, the reaction of the body to defend itself, appears to be a leading factor in many disease processes like diabetes, arthritis, cancer and heart disease. Inflammation appears to play a leading role in skin aging as well.

Lifestyle factors accelerate the aging process. These include

  • Exposure to the sun
  • Environmental pollutants
  • Tobacco smoke
  • Alcohol

All contribute to the formation of free radicals. Free radicals are compounds that damage skin cells. Oxygen free radicals destroy the cellular biomembranes of skin and create lipid peroxides that damage cellular lipid barriers and accelerate skin aging.

Healthy Skin
Skin health and skin aging has been the focus of scientific research for the past several decades. With recent advances in scientific techniques and a new understanding of cellular changes, the key to the process of skin aging is becoming more defined.

So What can you do to Have Healthy Skin

Healthy eating leads to healthy skin

Healthy eating leads to healthy skin

1. You are what you eat
Fresh Fruits and Vegetables are rich in antioxidants.
During the fall fruits and vegetables are plentiful to help save your skin. These include
Apples, Quince, Pomegranates, Cranberries, Kale, Spinach, and Sweet Potatoes.

2. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Hydrate both inside and out.
Drink plenty of water and use a good moisturizer. The air is drier and windier leading to a faster loss of moisture through the skin.

3. Use Sunblock
Even though you may not be at the beach or the pool, the sun is still out and can cause skin damage. Moisturizers with a barrier blocker (like micronized zinc oxide) protect your skin without irritation.

4. Professional Help
It never hurts to get a jumpstart on healthy skin. Consult an aesthetician for a program of Spa Treatments as well as products to restore your skin.
