The Ideal Breast Implant
The FDA approved Ideal Breast Implant, a new option for breast augmentation, is now available for women wanting a better shape. A structured saline implant, the ideal breast implant has several advantages over available saline breast implants and silicone breast implants.
Years of research and testing led to this innovative design. A series of implant shells nested together and two separate chambers, which hold the saline filler. The internal structure controls movement of the saline, and is designed to reduce folding and wrinkling, thought to be the main cause of implant rupture and deflation. On the outside, the edges have been lowered for better contouring to the chest wall.
Saline Breast Implants
Current breast implant options filled with saline have several drawbacks including a high incidence of visible wrinkling and rippling as well as a less natural feel. However, saline filled implants have several advantages over silicone implants. Since the implant is filled after it has been placed into the breast a smaller incision can be used for the procedure. Moreover, the amount of saline fill added to the breast implant can be adjusted to correct breast asymmetry.
In addition if saline breast implants leak, the body harmlessly absorbs the saline and deflation is easily recognized by the patient.
Silicone Breast Implants
Implants filled with silicone gel have a feel similar to that of natural breast tissue and have a very low incidence of rippling. However, because they are prefilled with silicone, these implants require larger incisions for placement and cannot be adjusted to balance breast size asymmetry. Moreover, if a silicone implant ruptures or leaks, it is not easily detectable. This silent rupture of a silicone breast implant may eventually cause breast pain or changes in the contour or shape of the breast.
For this reason, the FDA recommends that women with silicone implants undergo MRI imaging every two years after breast augmentation for as long as they have the implants.
