The Tummy Tuck is one of the fastest growing cosmetic plastic surgery procedures today, and is one of the most popular procedures performed at Galumbeck Plastic Surgery.
The first abdominoplasty was performed in France in 1890. Initially known as a dermatolipectomy, the tummy tuck procedure is an option that many women and men choose to improve the shape of their abdomen.
An abdominoplasty is a body contouring procedure that addresses excess belly fat, abdominal muscle separation, and loose skin. Most commonly seen after weight loss or after pregnancy, abdominal reshaping flattens your abdomen to improve your shape and proportion. In addition, liposuction can be performed to shape other areas of the body to help with overall body proportion. This procedure is an integral part of Mommy Makeovers and Plastic Surgery After Weight Loss
Who is a good candidate for a tummy tuck and what can a tummy tuck help improve are frequently asked questions by plastic surgery patients thinking about contouring their abdomen. An abdominoplasty removes fat, repositions muscles, eliminates loose skin, improves the appearance of the belly button, and removes stretch marks.
Despite diet and exercise, you cannot achieve the shape you want. You may consider a tummy tuck if
- Aging, heredity, pregnancy, prior surgery or weight fluctuations have left you with extra skin on your abdomen, abdominal muscle weakness, or both.
- Your weight is stable.
- You are physically healthy. You must be in relatively good physical shape to tolerate this procedure.
How Does An Abdominoplasty Help
Removes Excess Fat For A Contoured Tummy Tummy tuck surgery removes excess fat to produce a slender and flatter midsection. Patients no longer have to worry about their “muffin top” or “belly bulge” making an appearance.
Tightens Tummy Muscles For A Toned Abdomen Between the abdominal muscles is a band of tissue that has no elasticity. This band stretches to make room in the belly, such as for accommodating a baby during pregnancy or fat from weight gained. When the weight is lost or the baby is delivered, the abdominal muscles do not always return together. So despite doing thousands of crunches, the tummy bulge is not from muscles that are out of shape, just muscles in the wrong position. Repositioning the tummy muscles and tightening the laxity between them results in a flatter, tighter tummy. This is a key component of a tummy tuck.
Eliminates Loose Or Hanging Skin For A Flatter Tummy No amount of dieting and exercise can tighten significantly stretched skin. Many patients who have experienced extreme weight loss or gone through pregnancy have permanently stretched skin that gets in the way of their daily activities. An abdominoplasty removes the loose skin for a better shape.
Improves The Belly Button For A More Youthful Look The navel is another feature of the abdomen that should be evaluated during a consultation for abdominal contouring. If the belly button protrudes (an outie) or if a hernia is present, the navel may be repaired during an abdominoplasty.
Remove Stretch Marks Of The Lower Abdomen For More Confidence Stretch marks are an annoyance that many women and men know all too well. Stretch marks on the lower abdomen may be removed, restoring beautiful, healthy-looking skin.

The Tummy Tuck Procedure
This section will discuss the general abdominoplasty procedure. In addition, the following section will talk about special types of tummy tucks. The abdominoplasty procedure is performed in our fully accredited plastic surgery facility in Virginia Beach. Dr. Galumbeck will mark you before the start of the operation. Once in the operating room, you will receive intravenous sedation administered by one of our physician anesthesiologists.
- Liposuction – Dr. Galumbeck performs cold laser liposuction. He removes excess subcutaneous fat and sculpts the remaining superficial fat in the upper and lower abdomen, as well as, the sides of the waist.
- Incision – Dr. Galumbeck makes a panty line incision through the skin and fat usually from hip to hip
- Dissection – Dr. Galumbeck then dissects these tissue from the underlying muscles up to the level of the rib cage. The belly button is separated from the skin, but left attached to the abdominal wall.
- Muscle Repair – Next, Dr. Galumbeck asses the abdominal wall muscles. Often, the central muscles are separated (diastasis recti) as a result of pregnancy or weight loss. The separation often causes an abdominal bulge because the muscles are in the wrong position. Using permanent sutures, Dr. Galumbeck repositions the tummy muscles, flattening the abdomen.
- Excess Skin – Now that the excess fat has been removed and the tummy flattened, Dr. Galumbeck removes the excess skin.
- Umbilicoplasty – Dr. Galumbeck makes a new opening for the belly button, reshaping it for a rejuvenated look.
- Skin Closure – Dissolving stitches under the skin are placed to close the incision without leaving stitch marks and resulting in a thin tummy tuck scar. In addition, drains maybe placed.
Special Types of Abdominoplasties
In cosmetic surgery, a one size fits all does not apply. So, adjustments to the above abdominoplasty procedure can individualize the tummy tuck results. These options include an extended tummy tuck, a belt abdominoplasty, a mini tummy tuck and a male abdominoplasty.
For patients with excess skin of the flanks or loose pubic mound skin, an extended tummy tuck will address these additional problems. in addition to removal of more loose skin, liposuction of the flanks removes excess fat in the hip roll area. The incision is longer than a standard abdominoplasty, so a longer tummy tuck scar will result. However, loose flank skin will be removed leading to an overall improved appearance.
Belt Tummy Tuck
Also known as a circumferential abdominoplasty, this tummy tuck addresses loose skin and fat found on the back of the waist. Liposuction of the back of the waist as well as removal of excess skin, this procedure is used for patients who desire plastic surgery after weight loss. The incision goes around the entire midsection resulting in a tummy tuck scar that is circumferential.
if you have minimal loose skin and only a lower abdominal muscle bulge, a mini tummy tuck can help improve your shape. Cold laser liposuction is performed to remove excess deposits of fat in the abdomen. A small panty line incision, usually only a few inches long is made. The lower abdominal muscle separation is repaired and excess skin is removed. This procedure will leave a very small abdominoplasty scar.
Male Tummy Tuck
Cosmetic surgery for men is becoming more popular every year. Tummy tuck for men removes excess fat and skin creating a masculine appearance. Dr. Galumbeck uses laser liposuction to sculpt the abdomen. In addition, he removes excess skin flattening the abdomen. While women want an hourglass shape, the male abdominoplasty creates a v shaped or square athletic shape contour. With the abdominal muscle returned to the correct position, it is possible for men to regain a six pack.
