Uneven Skin Tone – How To Treat And Prevent

Uneven Skin Tone

treat uneven skin tone at Spa PhoenixThis week Heidi Lavan, our esteemed Master Esthetician from Spa Phoenix, discusses facial hyper pigmentation problems, how to treat them, and how to prevent them from coming back.

Uneven Skin Tone – Causes

Taking care of your skin can be a challenge when it’s marred by dark spots of hyperpigmentation. Dark patches can surface on anyone’s skin. Overproduction and irregular deposition of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color, causes uneven skin tones. The big three causes of uneven skin tone are sun damage, hormones, and trauma.

Sun Damage

One of the primary functions of melanin production in your skin is to protect you from UV rays from the sun. A suntan results from your body’s melanin response to the sun. With repeated sun exposure, pigmentation is produced irregularly leading to uneven skin tones.

Melasma, commonly known as pregnancy mask,  causes your face to appear as if you’re wearing a dark, blotchy veil. It’s generally the result of the combination of hormone fluctuations from birth control or pregnancy, and sun exposure.

If your skin undergoes any trauma, including cuts, scrapes, or bruises, the affected area can become discolored because the body increases pigment production in an injured area, referred to as post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Uneven skin tone can also be caused by irritation from shaving or waxing.

Uneven Skin Tone – Treatment

An easy to follow treatment regimen will help diminish the appearance of brown spots and uneven skin tone. Exfoliate – Use a gentle exfoliating scrub, like Skin Amnesty Exfoliating Face Mask. Removing thickened layers of dead skin cells will not only make the skin smoother, but will also diminish uneven skin tones. Repair – Products containing Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Soy Proteins, and Aloe, like the Skin Amnesty Restore Protect Serum can reduce inflammation and sun damage, resulting in lighter brighter skin. Professional Help – Utilize the services of a Master Esthetician to select a professional peel program to accelerate the process, such as the Phoenix Peel, the Amnesty Peel, and the Phoenix X Peel.

Uneven Skin Tone – Prevention

Start with sun protection. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher will help maintain an even skin tone because it will prevent sunlight from triggering more melanin production. Small changes in your habits can also help, especially in preventing more trauma to the skin. If you have problems such as acne, cuts, or bruises, it’s best to keep your hands away. Don’t rub, don’t touch, don’t scratch, don’t pick. Following these simple measures will make uneven skin tone ancient history!

Blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery, was the third most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedure in 2015.

Usually, when a person reaches his or her late 30s or early 40s, the supporting structures of the eyelids begin to weaken. Eyelid fat protrudes, stretching the delicate eyelid skin. In the lower eyelids, prominent fat and stretched skin appear as puffiness or bags. In the upper eyelids, this results in excess folds of skin that may actually hang down over the edge of the upper eyelids. Fine wrinkle lines and creases appear in the delicate skin around the lids. The result is a tired, sleepy or sad look. These changes detract from the natural beauty of the eye area.

Blepharoplasty, one of the procedures for facial rejuvenation, is designed to improve one’s appearance by reducing the prominence of wrinkles, drooping and other imperfections in the eyelids. This may be done for either the upper or lower eyelids, or for both.

Blepharoplasty – Indications

The following conditions can be treated by eyelid surgery.

  • Puffiness in the upper eyelids caused by excess fatty deposits
  • Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision
  • Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Droopiness of the lower eyelids

Blepharoplasty – Procedure

The incision for the upper lid is made through the upper eyelid crease. A segment of skin is removed; if necessary, fat underneath the lid is removed as well. The incision for the lower eyelid is made approximately just below the rim of the lower eyelashes. Excess skin and fat is removed to achieve the desired result.

Blepharoplasty – Recovery

Cold compresses should be applied over the eyes during the first 24-48 hours after surgery. Sutures are removed two days after surgery. The eyelids are discolored and swollen for two to seven days, depending upon the patient’s skin type, age and healing ability. It is common to feel “tightness” of the eyelids for some time after surgery.

Blepharoplasty – Cost

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery, The average cost of eyelid surgery is $2,874.

Blepharoplasty cost can vary widely. The average fee above does not include anesthesia, operating room facilities or other related expenses.

Make sure that your blepharoplasty cost includes:

  • Anesthesia fees
  • Hospital or surgical facility costs
  • Medical tests
  • Surgeon’s fee

Cosmetic Surgery | Top 5 Procedures in 2015

Cosmetic Surgery 2015

The top 5 cosmetic surgery procedures from the The American Society of Plastic Surgery has recently been released for 2015. Over 1.7 million cosmetic surgery procedures and 15.9 million minimally invasive procedures were performed.

Top 5 Cosmetic Surgery Procedures Breast Augmentation Liposuction Rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) Tummy Tuck

The total number of procedures remained about the same as in 2014. While cosmetic surgery procedures have decreased approximately 10% since 2000, tummy tucks have increased an astonishing 104% Facelift  filled the number six position, closely behind tummy tucks.

The top 5 non surgical procedures include Botox Soft Tissue Fillers Chemical Peels Laser Hair Removal Microdermabrasion

The data collected was from board certified plastic surgeons who participated in the study sharing their operative data with the American Society of Plastic Surgery. Since 2000 the total number of cosmetic surgery procedures has decreased 10%. Liposuction has decreased 37%, while breast augmentation has increased 31%. I think the most likely explanation for the decrease in liposuction is that physicians other than plastic surgeons are performing the procedure.

Just remember when it comes to your  procedure, make sure your physician is a board certified plastic surgeon, who can show you pre and postoperative photographs of patients that he or she has performed the procedure on. Make sure the facility is accredited and that an anesthesiologist is present during the procedure to ensure your safety. While cosmetic surgery is safe and performed millions of times a year, it is still a surgical procedure and needs to be approached with careful thought and planning.

CoolSculpting or Liposuction | Which Is Right For You

CoolSculpting, cryolipolysis, is a non invasive technique to contour areas of the body. Liposuction is a procedure to permanently remove fat cells while accurately sculpting the body.

CoolSculpting or Liposuction

coolsculpting or laser liposuction

CoolSculpting vs Liposuction – The Procedure

CoolSculpting – The area to be treated is marked. Then a transparent gel pad is placed to protect the skin, and the applicator head is put into position. A vacuum is turned on. Once the bulge is sucked into a cup, two cooling panels numb the area. The fat cell freezing takes about an hour. After an hour, the area is massaged to break up fat cells.

Liposuction – The area to be treated is marked. An anesthetic solution is injected into the area fat. A small cannula, tube, is inserted into the fat and with the assistance of a vacuum  the fat is removed, precisely sculpting the area.

CoolSculpting vs Liposuction – The Results

  • a noninvasive technology
  • no or minimal down time
  • less dramatic results compared with liposuction. Only 20-25% of fat reduction
  • risks of pain or paradoxical increase in fat
  • treatable body part areas is limited by fit of application head
  • bulges must be pinchable to fit into cup

  • Surgical procedure
  • 1-2 day down time
  • More aggressive and complete fat reduction
  • Better contouring
  • More immediate results
  • The possibility of simultaneous surgical procedures

A recent study reviewed the effectiveness of cool sculpting of the saddlebag area. Forty women had one of their saddlebags treated and one untreated. According to the authors “at the conclusion of the study, 7 of the 40 subjects received optional equalization treatment to the control thigh. Thirty subjects declined equalization treatment.

If the treatment was so effective why would 75% of the patients not want to cool sculpt their other thigh for symmetry?

Breast Lift With Implants

Breast Lift With Implants

Breast lift with implants is a plastic surgery procedure to improve the size and shape of a woman’s breasts. Breast lift with implants is an excellent option for any woman whose breasts have begun to droop; however, it is a particularly popular among mothers who wish to regain their pre-pregnancy figures, often as part of a Mommy Makeover. Many women choose to combine breast lift with breast augmentation in order to elevate and enlarge their breasts simultaneously. Women often seek a breast lift with implants after experiencing significant weight loss, pregnancy, or aging, which can all cause breasts to sag and loss of volume.

Breast Lift With Implants

Breast Lift With Implants After Pregnancy

Pregnancy and breastfeeding are two of the most common causes of drooping breasts. Many women begin to consider a breast lift after they have children. Breast lift combined with breast augmentation can reshape the breasts to their pre pregnancy shape. While it is safe to breast-feed after an augmentation mastopexy, the breasts may develop more droop requiring a secondary breast lift.

Breast Lift With Implants After Weight Loss

Weight loss can give you a new lease on life and Plastic Surgery After Weight Loss is a very popular group of cosmetic plastic surgery procedures. Because excess weight will stretch your skin, weight loss can also leave you with drooping empty breasts. Once you have achieved your goal weight a breast lift with implants can restore firmness and the shape of your breasts.

Breast Lift With Implants Cost

What does a breast lift combined with a breast augmentation cost? The cost of an augmentation mastopexy is about $6300 according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. This is for the surgeon’s fee only and does not include other associated costs for this cosmetic surgical procedure such as anesthesia or the operating room. It’s important to know all the fees for plastic surgery procedures.

How to Choose a Surgeon

For an augmentation mastopexy it is best to see a board certified plastic surgeon who performs cosmetic breast procedures frequently. Ask to see breast lift with implants before and after pictures. A breast lift is a physical change as well as a psychological journey, so it is essential that you work with a physician who makes you feel at ease.

Operating Facilities

In most cases, a breast lift with implants is an outpatient procedures. At Galumbeck Plastic Surgery in Virginia Beach, the procedure is performed in our fully accredited facility. We are accredited by the American Associations for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Centers. This accreditation indicates that our Virginia Beach Plastic Surgery center is completely up to date and follows proper safety protocols.

The Initial Consultation

During your initial consultation at Galumbeck Plastic Surgery, Dr. Galumbeck will examine your breast size and shape, skin elasticity, the amount of droop that you have as well as your nipple position and the position of your nipples in relation to the rest of your breast tissue. This is exam along with your goals of size and shape will help determine the type of breast lift with implants is best suited for you.

During this consultation you will also discuss which surgical techniques will most effectively achieve your goals. For the best results, it is important to be honest about your expectations and goals. You will talk about your breast implant options including the differences between saline breast implants, silicone gel breast implants and the structured saline breast implant, Ideal Breast implant.

Breast Lift with Implants Technique

There are several types of incisions for breast augmentation with implants. The incisions for an augmentation mastopexy take into consideration the size of your breasts, the extent to which they are drooping, your skin quality, your nipple position and the size of your breast implants.

Doughnut Augmentation Mastopexy

Doughnut mastopexy with implants involves circumferential incisions around your nipple and areola. It is important to note that the doughnut technique may not be the optimal choice if you have larger breasts.

Lollipop Augmentation Mastopexy

The lollipop breast lift with implants, vertical augmentation mastopexy, involves an incision around your nipple and areola as well as from the bottom of the areola to the breast crease.

Anchor Augmentation Mastopexy

The anchor augmentation mastopexy involves the creation of an incision around the border of the areola, a second vertical incision down to the base of the breast, and a third horizontal incision along the breast crease.

Breast lift with implants recovery varies for each patient. At Galumbeck Plastic Surgery, breast implant endoscopeDr. Galumbeck uses an endoscope for the procedure. This is a specialized TV camera to assist with surgery. According to a recent article in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, endoscopic breast surgery is associated with shortened recovery times, a reduced need for drainage, and excellent outcomes. With aid of the endoscope drains are not used postoperatively. Most women are back to work and social activities in just a few days.

A breast lift with implants can give you noticeably firmer, perkier breasts. Although you will probably notice an immediate improvement in your figure, the final results of your surgery will not be apparent for several months. As swelling subsides and your breasts adjust to their new shape, you will begin to enjoy the full effects of your procedure.

Liposuction Vs Tummy Tuck? How To Choose

Liposuction Vs Tummy Tuck

Reshaping of the tummy after having kids or weight loss is a popular procedure. But with so many options out there, it is difficult to decide which procedure is best. For liposuction vs tummy tuck, what does each procedure entail?  What is the cost of a tummy tuck; what is the price of liposuction? What is the recovery time for liposuction or days out of work for a tummy tuck?

First it’s important to know what a tummy tuck or liposuction can do and who it’s best for.

Liposuction vs Tummy Tuck – Evaluation Of The Abdomen

  • Abdominal Fat – liposuction vs tummy tuck- where's the fatSculpting the abdomen is a key element in both liposuction and
tummy tuck. Both procedures only reshape the fat that is above the tummy muscles. Rule of Thumb- If you can pinch it, you can sculpt it.
  • Tummy Muscle – liposuction vs tummy tuck muscle bulgeThe abdominal muscles, the rectus abdomini muscles are the two central muscles of the tummy that, when toned, can give us a six pack. Between the muscles is a band of tissue that has no elasticity. After pregnancy or weight gain and weight loss, this band stretches. So despite doing thousands of crunches, the tummy bulge is not from muscles that are out of shape, just muscles in the wrong position. Repositioning the tummy muscles and tightening the laxity between them results in a flatter, tighter tummy. This is a key component of a tummy tuck.
  • Tummy Skin – With Liposuction, the tummy skin can shrink somewhat, but a tummy tuck removes excess skin, ensuring a firmer, flatter tummy.

Liposuction vs Tummy Tuck – The Procedure

I prefer Cold Laser Liposuction. External cold laser liquefies fat cells with no chance of burning the skin or other tissues. A small cannula is inserted into fat deposit. A low vacuum is used to sculpt the fat. The excess fat is permanently removed.

Tummy Tuck

The tummy tuck includes liposuction to sculpt and remove excess fat. In addition, the tummy muscles are tightened and excess skin is removed. This combination allows for a tight firm abdomen.

Liposuction vs Tummy Tuck – The Recovery

The recovery for liposuction is relatively quick. Most people undergoing liposuction are back to work and social activity is just a few days.

Tummy Tuck

The recovery for a tummy tuck is a bit longer. Most people can resume normal activities in about 1 week and return to strenuous activities in 2 to 3 weeks.

Liposuction vs Tummy Tuck – The Cost

What does liposuction cost? The cost of liposuction is about $3,000 according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. This is for the surgeon’s fee only and does not include other associated costs for liposuction such as anesthesia or the operating room. It’s important to know all the fees for plastic surgery procedures.

Tummy Tuck

What does a tummy tuck cost? The cost of a tummy tuck is about $5,500 according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. This is for the surgeon’s fee only and does not include other associated costs for a tummy tuck such as anesthesia or the operating room. It’s important to know all the fees for plastic surgery procedures.

Liposuction vs Tummy Tuck – The Results

Liposuction of the abdomen as well as tummy tucks can give great results. Make sure to discuss all of your options with your board certified plastic surgeon. That’s the best way to make sure you get the final result you envision.

Winter Skin Care – 10 Tips To Survive the Chill

Winter skin care doesn’t have to be difficult. The weather outside is frightful. Dry winter air can wreak havoc on your skin leaving it dry, itchy, and irritated.

winter skin care tips

Heidi Lavan, one of our master estheticians, offers winter skin care tips to combat dry skin causes and help keep your skin feeling moist and supple all winter long.

Winter Skin Care Tips

  1. Invest in a humidifier – Using a humidifier in your home or office will add moisture to dry winter air and help keep your skin hydrated. Run a humidifier in the rooms you spend the most time in, including your bedroom while you sleep.
  2. Lower the thermostat – When it’s chilly outside, what’s the first thing you want to do? Crank up the heat! But central heat can make the air in your house even drier. Try setting the thermostat at a cool, yet comfortable setting (68°F to 72°F) to maintain healthy skin.
  3. Skip hot showers – Although it may be tempting to warm up with a long, steamy shower, hot water dries out your skin by stripping it of its natural oils. Instead, take a 5-10 minute lukewarm shower. You should also avoid using excessively hot water when washing your hands.
  4. Choose cleanser wisely –  For optimal winter skin care steer clear of regular bar soaps, since they tend to contain irritating ingredients and fragrances. Instead, start washing with a fragrance-free, moisturizing cleanser.
  5. Modify your facial skin care regimen for the season – During the winter months, choose cream-based cleansers, and apply toners sparingly. Look for toners that contain little or no alcohol unless your skin is excessively oily. For winter skin care at night, use a richer moisturizer on your face.
  6. Moisturize frequently – Maintain healthy skin by moisturizing after washing up. It’s best to use a cream or ointment in the winter. Lotions are better in warmer, humid climates.
  7. Apply sunscreen even in winter – It is still important to protect your skin from harmful UV rays on cold, dreary days in winter. Before going outside, apply a moisturizing, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher to all exposed areas of your body.
  8. Wear appropriate clothing – Many cold-weather fabrics can aggravate dry winter skin. Keep wool and rough clothing from directly touching your skin as they can cause dry skin to get irritated and itchy.  Wear soft, breathable materials against your skin, and then pull on a warmer sweater. Protect your hands from cold winter air with gloves or mittens.
  9. Eat right and stay hydrated – Sometimes when skin is very dry, it can be helped by foods or supplements that contain omega-3 or omega-6 fatty acids, such as fish oil and flax seed oil. For the most part it is important to help the skin moisturize from the outside.
  10. Change out of wet clothes quickly – Wearing wet clothes and shoes can further irritate your skin and cause itchiness. Be sure to remove wet gloves, socks, and pants as soon as possible.

The best tip for great winter skin care is to visit Spa Phoenix for medically directed restorative and rejuvenating treatments.

Facial Fillers – 5 Tips For First Time Patients

Last Year over 2 million injections of facial fillers were performed, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgery. As we age, our faces naturally lose subcutaneous fat. The facial muscles are then working closer to the skin surface, so wrinkles become more apparent. Dermal fillers can be very helpful in those with early signs of aging, or as a value-added part of facial rejuvenation surgery.

facial fillers at galumbeck plastic surgery
Dermal fillers, such as Juvederm, Restylane and Radiesse, can be used to:

  • Plump thin lips
  • Enhance shallow contours
  • Soften facial creases and wrinkles
  • Improve the appearance of recessed scars

The popularity of dermal fillers has grown significantly over recent years as these treatments are relatively painless, provide quick results, and require little to no recovery time.

Juvederm and Restylane are composed of Hyaluronic Acid, a naturally occurring sugar found in the body. Hyaluronic Acid holds water at the injection site and acts as a cushioning agent.

Radiesse is a cosmetic filler that has small microspheres (particles) comprised of calcium hydroxylapatite suspended in a gel-like solution.

Tips For Facial Fillers

In today’s market there are many different types of dermal fillers each of which address different concerns. Hyaluronic acid based fillers like Juvederm and Restylane, for example, are effective in restoring moisture and plumpness into the skin by attracting water to the treated area, while Radiesse is better for deeper lines and for restoring volume.

It is important to understand what injectables are capable of treating and to know what realistic results will be. An experienced injector should be able to guide you to the best course of treatment to achieve your desired results.

Just like any other medical procedure selecting the right provider is important. When deciding who to trust for your procedure, make sure the injector has ample experience in using a variety of fillers and is properly (and currently) licensed. It’s always a good idea to review testimonials from previous patients or seek recommendations from friends or family.

Be sure to follow all instructions both before and after your treatment. Failing to follow simple instructions like not taking an aspirin before the procedure or working out after the procedure can make all the difference between a great and not-so-great treatment.

While injectables require little to no downtime, some individuals will experience minor swelling or bruising immediately following the procedure, both of which subside on their own.

While they are long-lasting, the effects of injectables will eventually wear off. Typically results can last anywhere from four months to six months depending on the specific filler  used. Keep in mind that in order to maintain your desired results periodic maintenance treatments will be necessary.

Plastic Surgery Prices

Plastic Surgery Prices

The demand for cosmetic plastic surgery is always increasing. Last year over 1.8 million cosmetic surgery procedures were performed in the United States. Since Plastic Surgery prices are usually not covered by insurance, it is more important than ever for patients to know what they are paying for.

After evaluation by a board certified Plastic Surgeon, a patient should receive a written price quotation. The Plastic Surgery prices should include

  • Surgeon fees
  • Material costs (breast implants, etc.)
  • Operating room costs (staff salaries, rent, costs of operating machinery)
  • Anesthesia related costs
  • Any included medications or post-surgical compression devices
  • Follow up appointments
  • Any postoperative treatments

In the case of plastic surgery gone wrong, always ask about the practice’s policy on revisions. Make sure to ask if there are any other costs for the procedure such as prescriptions.

Most importantly, find out the recovery time for the procedure you are having done. New techniques in cosmetic surgery have dramatically decreased recovery time. Time lost from work is probably the most expensive aspect of undergoing cosmetic surgery.

Plastic Surgery Prices -YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR

While the cost of surgery is an important factor to consider, it is also crucial to remember that you will live with outcome of the surgery for the rest of your life. Your highest priority should be on finding the best plastic surgeon that will help you attain your goals.

  1. Look for a surgeon that you are comfortable with and agree with how he or she plans to perform the surgical procedure.
  2. Choose a board certified plastic surgeon rather than a doctor from another specialty that performs plastic surgery.
  3. Choose a surgeon who has an abundance of experience and a variety of before and after plastic surgery pictures for the procedure you want to undergo.
  4. Ensure that the physician you choose understands the goals you have in mind and agrees that they are realistic and attainable.
  5. If the procedure requires anesthesia, find out what type of anesthesia is used and whether a physician anesthesiologist will be administering the medication.
  6. Make sure your surgery will be performed in a properly accredited facility. Galumbeck Plastic Surgery in Virginia Beach is accredited by The American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities.

The AAAASF was established in 1980 to develop an accreditation program to standardize and improve the quality of medical and surgical care in ambulatory surgery facilities while assuring the public of high standards for patient care and safety in an accredited facility.

Undergoing cosmetic surgery is a life altering event. Patients are undergoing a physical change as well as a psychological change. Choose wisely, so that you will look as good as you feel.

Tummy Liposuction After Kids

Tummy Liposuction After Kids – A Patient’s Story

“Recovery was quick and I did not miss a game or a meeting.”
Alexandra, 36, Virginia Beach, VA
Her Laser Body Shaping: Laser Liposuction of the Abdomen

How do you feel about yourself now that you’ve had plastic surgery?
I feel wonderful. I never dreamed that I could have a flat tummy again.

What did you want to change about yourself that made you consider plastic surgery?
After having two kids, I continued to feel like I looked pregnant. Dieting and crunches just did not work. I really wanted to get rid of that pregnancy pooch.

How did you hear about Galumbeck Plastic Surgery?
My son’s kindergarten teacher had eyelid surgery at Galumbeck Plastic Surgery.
When I commented on how good she looked one day, she told me about her procedure with Dr. Galumbeck. She highly recommended him.

How would you describe your lifestyle?
Very active. I played soccer in high school and coach my son’s team now. I work part-time in sales so I want to look my best. My husband and I are very involved in our church’s youth group. I enjoy mentoring the high school students. My mom has some health problems so I spend quite a bit of time helping her as well.

What procedures did Dr. Galumbeck suggest to you? Which did he perform?
I had done a good bit of research before my consultation. I was not sure if liposuction alone would help me or if I needed a tummy tuck. I was very happy when Dr. Galumbeck felt that tummy liposuction alone would solve my problem. He discussed that my skin tone was good. He felt that after removing the extra fat, my stomach skin would tighten. So, I chose laser liposuction.

mommy makeover laser lipo abs galumbeck plastic surgery

tummy liposuction after kids virginia beach

Did you feel that you had options, and a voice in your plastic surgery?
I felt that Dr. Galumbeck listened to my concerns and I felt confident in his recommendation for my surgery.

What concerns did you have about your surgery?
Mainly, I was concerned about recovery time and if I could have surgery and still keep my commitments. Luckily, recovery was quick and I did not miss a soccer game or youth group meeting.

Would you do it again?
To have a flat tummy? Of course!
